Quiana Parks, (b.1986)
Mommy & Me, 2018
The most beautiful woman Parks has ever seen is her creator. With the aim of placing the magnificence of Black mothers in the forefront, the artist positioned a child-version of herself in the nook of her single parent's neck. This endearing placement is a testament to their close knit bond and her mother's protection. As a product of the late '80s, Parks reminisced over a neon hair barrette, the aesthetic of the era, and her mother's signature golden bamboo earrings. In essence, the colorful origin is that of a queen, hers.
"My mother is a cosmetologist. These makeup colors are what she wore to her baby shower while carrying me. So, I use them in all of my paintings to represent a strong Black woman." - Quiana Parks
